Merril's Building

The Merrill's Building is a City of Napa Landmark that has stood vacant for years, slipping ever further into a state of neglect. Constructed in 1929, Merrill's Spanish Colonial Revival facade retains much of its original splendor despite the building's deferred maintenance. Though the ground-floor facade has been altered over the years, the building retains its terra cotta pilasters with their floral capitals, as well as spiral coloneetes alon the upper-story windows. Sam Gordon, who built Merrill's as well as the similar Gordon Building a block to the east, was a real estate developer and theater owner in Napa and San Francisco. The Merril's and Gordon buildings are important transitions between Napa's Victorian-era Downtown buildings and more recently constructed commercial buildings.

Once home to Napa's Downtown drugstore, Merril's closed long ago. Napa County Landmarks advocates for seismically retrofitting and rehabilitating the building. We believe that, in addition to its architectural and historical value, Merrill's can contribute economically to a revitalizing First Street.
